EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team started a five-game homestand by winning both ends of a doubleheader over Missouri University of Science & Technology in extra innings Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI won the opener 2-1 in 12 innings and the nightcap 4-3 in eight innings.

The Screaming Eagles raise their record to 20-11 overall and 11-2 in the GLVC, while the Miners fall to 11-15 overall, 5-8 GLVC.

In the first game, USI junior designated hitter Caleb Emhke (Waterloo, Indiana) drove in junior leftfielder Royle Beach (Aurora, Colorado) with the game-winning run with a two-out single in the 12th innings. Beach had moved into scoring position on a sacrifice and a balk after reaching base on a walk to begin the Eagle 12th.

USI junior right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) got the win in relief. Dewig (1-0) work 1 2/3 innings and struck out two to get the win.

USI senior right-handed starter Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) got a no-decision despite pitching nine innings and did not allow a Miner hit until the seventh inning. Kehrt's line was two hits (both in the seventh) and one run, while striking out six.

In the nightcap, the Eagles came from behind twice to win 4-3 in eight innings on a two-run single by junior second baseman Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana). Huebner's singled scored Ehmke with the tying run and junior pinch hitter Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana) with the winning run.

USI had the early 1-0 lead before Missouri S&T took its first lead of the day, 2-1, on single tallies in the fourth and fifth. The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, 2-2, on a RBI single by junior shortstop Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee). The Miners retook took the lead in the extra frame, 3-2, setting the scene for Huebner in the bottom half of the eighth.

Eagles' junior right-hander Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) picked up his second win of the year in relief in game two. Larsen (2-1) pitched one inning, allowing an inherited runner on a sacrifice fly, and struck out one.

The Eagles and the Miners resume the four-game series at the USI Baseball Field Sunday at noon.
