EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Missouri University of Science & Technology, 7-6 and 5-1, Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI raises its record 22-11 overall and 13-2 in the GLVC, while Missouri S&T falls to 11-17 overall, 5-10 GLVC.

USI junior right-hander Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) set the Eagles' single-season record for saves with his ninth of the year to preserve the 7-6 victory in game one. Larsen work 1 1/3 innings to get the save, striking out three.

The nine saves breaks the record of Rob Bowers, who had eight saves for USI in 1999.

To set the stage for Larsen, the Eagles had to come back from a pair of three-run deficits. USI spotted Missouri S&T a 3-0 lead in the first inning and a 6-3 lead in the third before exploding for four runs in the fifth to win, 7-6.

USI junior rightfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana), who is hitting .302 with three home runs and 14 RBIs since becoming a starter 14 games ago, got the Eagles' rally going in the fifth with a three-run triple to left to tie the game, 6-6. Werry would score the winning run two batters later when junior designated hitter Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana) tripled to leftfield with two outs.

The win in game one went to sophomore right-hander Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) in relief. Geiger (4-2) went 2 2/3 innings in relief of starting left-hander Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana), allowing just two hits.

In the nightcap, USI junior right-hander P.J. Thomas (Jeffersonville, Indiana) dominated Missouri S&T for 8 2/3 innings to lead the Eagles to a 5-1 win. Thomas allowed four hits and one run, while striking out four before allowing the bullpen to finish the ninth.

The Eagles gave Thomas plenty of runs to play with in the first inning by flying out to a 4-0 lead.

Ehmke led the Eagles offensively in game two, going two-for-four with two RBIs (both in the first inning) and a double. Sophomore shortstop Wes Fink (Clarksville, Tennessee) also provided some fireworks with his team-best fourth home run of the season to cap off the USI scoring in fifth.

USI concludes the five-game homestand Tuesday when it hosts Bellarmine University for a non-conference single game. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
