Eagles drop home finale, 6-5, to Tritons

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 21st -ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team closed out the 2008 home schedule with a loss to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, 6-5, Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI's record falls to 33-15 overall and 21-6 in the GLVC, while UMSL goes to 17-23 overall, 11-15 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles never led in the game, spotting the Triton a 4-1 lead after the first two innings. USI bounced back to tie the game, 4-4, with a three-fun fifth inning.

USI junior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) sparked the Eagles' three-run fifth with a one-out two-run double to cut the led to 4-3. Thieroff would tie the game at four when he scored on an RBI single by junior leftfielder Royle Beach (Aurora, Colorado).

The Triton would retake the lead in the top of the seventh before USI would tie the game for a second time in the bottom half of the inning. Thieroff tied score 5-5 when Beach knocked him in with his second RBI-single.

UMSL took the lead for the final time when it pushed across the winning run in the top of the eighth.

On the mound, junior left-hander Patrick Crider (Owensboro, Kentucky) took the loss in relief for the Eagles. Crider (1-3) was charged with winning run in the eighth, an unearned tally.

USI junior right-hander P.J. Thomas (Jeffersonville, Indiana) started the game for the Eagles, allowing the first four runs. Freshman right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) pitched effectively for four innings in relief of Thomas before giving way to Crider.

The Eagles are on the road for the rest of the regular season, starting with a road doubleheader at Northern Kentucky University Wednesday at 1 p.m. USI finishes the regular season at Drury University for a four-game series on May 3-4.
