EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 21st -ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team clinched the GLVC West Division championship with a 10-7 win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis in game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The GLVC regular season championship is the first for the Screaming Eagles since 1993.
In addition to clinching the division crown, senior right-handerÂ
Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) tied the USI single-season record wins with his team-best eighth of the season. Kehrt (8-1) allowed nine hits and seven runs in 6 2/3 innings, but struck out six to get the win.
USI senior right-handed closerÂ
Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) got the final out for the Eagles and recorded his 15th save of the season. Larsen is just one save shy of the USI career record of 16 in his first season with the team.
At the plate, the Eagles got plenty of power from junior second basemanÂ
Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana) and junior designated hitterÂ
Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana). Huebner started a five-run two-out rally in the third inning with a solo home run, while Ehmke highlighted USI's five-run fourth inning with a grand slam.
The home runs were Huebner's and Emhke's first of the season and as Eagles.
In the nightcap, the Tritons tuned the tables on the Eagles with a 6-3 victory. UMSL came back from a 2-0 deficit with four unanswered runs in the fourth and sixth before adding two insurance runs in the ninth to take the game.
The USI offensive highlight in game two came in the seventh when junior third basemanÂ
Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) cut the UMSL lead to 4-3 on his second home run of the season.
After the doubleheader split, USI's record goes to 33-14 overall and 21-4 in the GLVC. UMSL finishes the day 16-23 overall, 10-15 GLVC.
The Eagles concludes the 2008 home schedule and the four-game series with Senior Day Sunday at 1 p.m. at the USI Baseball Field. USI will honor its seven seniors – Kehrt, lefthanderÂ
