USI bangs out 14 hits and wins 11-3

EVANSVILLE, Ind. . – The University of Sothern Indiana baseball team pounded out 14 hits and won the series opener, 11-3, over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Friday night at Bosse Field. USI raises its record to 32-13 overall and 20-4 in the GLVC, while UMSL falls to 15-22 overall, 9-14 GLVC.

The victory pulls the Screaming Eagles to within one win of clinching the GLVC West Division crown. The Eagles' last regular season championship in the GLVC came back in 1993.

Tonight's USI offensive explosion was led junior second baseman Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana), who was four-of-four with three runs scored, a double, a triple, and a pair of stolen bases. He was followed by junior designated hitter Caleb Emhke (Waterloo, Indiana), who had three hits, three runs scored, and three RBIs and junior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana), who was three-of-four with a double and two RBIs.

The Eagles put the game out of reach with a four-run first inning, before sealing the game with three runs in the fourth and four in the sixth.

On the mound, USI senior left-hander Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana) posted his fifth victory of the year. Julian (5-3) allowed three hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings of work, while tying a season-high with seven strikeouts.

USI freshman right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) finished the game for Julian and posted his first collegiate save. Leach was touched for two hits and one unearned run, while striking out three in three innings of work.

The Eagles and the Tritons resume the four-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at the USI Baseball Field. The series concludes Sunday at noon for Senior Day.
