USI drops a pair at KWC Wednesday

Owensboro, Ky.. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team was swept by Kentucky Wesleyan College in a non-conference doubleheader, 6-4 and 8-3, Wednesday afternoon in Owensboro, Kentucky. USI falls to 18-11 overall, while KWC goes to 9-22.

In the opening game, the Screaming Eagles squandered a pair of three-run leads to lose 6-4. USI jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-1 after three-and-a-half innings. KWC battled back to tie the game with three runs in the third and took the lead with two solo home runs in the fourth.

The nightcap saw the Panthers take advantage of three Eagle errors and score five unearned runs to win 8-3. KWC offense produced all eight of its runs in the first three innings.

The Eagles tried to get back into the game by cutting the lead to 4-2 in the top of the third, only to have the Panthers seal the victory with a four-run bottom half of the inning.

USI was led in the doubleheader by junior third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Illinois), who was three-for-seven with two RBIs and a double. Senior first baseman Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana) and junior rightfielder Chad Werry (Newburgh, Indiana) provided highlights in the nightcap with a solo home run and a two-run home runs, respectively.

The Eagles, who were 3-3 on the road trip, return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field this weekend when they host Missouri University of Science and Technology for a four-game GLVC series. The first pitch Saturday and Sunday is noon each day.
