EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 25th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team started a four-game series with Lewis University by splitting a doubleheader Saturday at the USI Basebal Field. Lewis took the opener, 4-1, while USI bounced back to take the nightcap, 5-0.

The Screaming Eagles take their record to 28-13 overall and 17-4 in the GLVC, while Lewis goes to 14-19 overall, 8-12 GLVC.

In the Eagles' game two victory, senior right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) and freshman right-hander Trevor Leach (Danville, Indiana) combined to shutout the Flyers on two hits and lead the USI to a 5-0 win. Kehrt (7-1) pulled to within one victory of the USI single-season record with his seventh win of the year by allowing just two hits and striking out four in six innings of work.

Leach pitched a perfect seventh inning, striking out all three of the Flyer batters that he faced.

Entering this season, 10 USI hurlers have reached the single season record of eight wins in a season. The last hurlers to reach the eight-win plateau was last season by USI senior left-hander Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana) and former USI right-hander Adam Summers.

Offensively, USI senior centerfielder Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana) led the way by going two-for-two with a run scored and one RBIs. The Eagles benefited offensively by five Flyer errors in the nightcap.

In the opener, Lewis right-hander Adam Stabosz stymied the USI hitters for 7 1/3 innings as the Flyer won 4-1. The Eagles could only manage three hits in the loss.

USI tried to mount a comeback attempt in the eighth. The Eagles loaded the bases, but were only able to push one run across the plate and ended the inning with the bags full.

Julian (4-3) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings of work. He also struck out five Lewis hitters.

The Eagles and the Flyers complete the four-game series on Sunday with a noon doubleheader.
