EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 25th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team swept a doubleheader from Lewis University Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI won the opener, 6-4, and completed the sweep in the nightcap, 5-2.

The Screaming Eagles raise their record to 30-13 overall and 19-4 in the GLVC. The 30-wins mark the first time since 1993 and 1994 that USI has been able to put together a pair of 30-victory seasons. The Eagles also are just one win off the pace set by last season's record breaking team.

The Flyers fall to 14-21 overall, 8-14 in the GLVC.

USI scored twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth to come from behind to win the opener, 6-4. Lewis had taken a 4-1 lead in the fourth on a grand slam, setting the stage for the USI comeback.

The Eagles were led in the opener by junior leftfielder Royle Beach (Aurora, Colorado). Beach was two-for-three, including a two-run double in the sixth inning to drive in the winning run. He also scored twice.

USI senior catcher Garrett Oros (Aurora, Illinois) also had two hits and a RBI in the win, while junior second baseman Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana) had an RBI triple.

On the mound, junior right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) picked up his second win of the season in relief. Dewig (2-0) worked an inning in relief of junior staring right-hander Matt Nichols (Newburgh, Indiana), who went the first five-plus innings.

USI junior right-hander Shuan Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) pitched a perfect seventh to record his 12th save of the season.

In the nightcap, USI junior right-hander P.J. Thomas (Jeffersonville, Indiana) escaped a shaky first inning to win his fifth game and give USI a 5-2 victory. Thomas (5-1) allowed two runs (one earned) and five hits, while striking out four in six-plus innings of work.

Eagles' sophomore right-hander Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) worked two innings of relief work before Larsen pitched a perfect ninth inning to get his second save of the day and his 13th of the year.

USI resumes action on Wednesday when it travels to Bellarmine University for a non-conference single game in Louisville, Kentucky. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. (CST).

The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field for the final time in the 2008 regular season next weekend when they host the University of Missouri-St. Louis for Alumni Weekend.
