USI begins homestand on a winning note

Box Score: Southern Indiana 7, Northern Kentucky 4

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team spotted Northern Kentucky University a 3-0 lead in the first inning before coming back to win, 7-4, Wednesday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI raises its record to 27-12 overall with the non-conference victory, while NKU falls to 24-15 in 2007-08.

After giving up a three-run first inning, USI junior left-hander Patrick Crider (Owensboro, Kentucky) settled down in the next six innings to earn his first victory as a Screaming Eagle. Crider (1-2) allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out three in seven innings of work.

USI sophomore right-hander Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) pitched a scoreless eighth before junior right-handed closer Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) put the game away with a scoreless ninth for his 11th save of the year.

In just his first season, Larsen needs just five saves to tie Mike Fetscher's USI career-record of 16.

The Eagles got back into the game by chipping away at the Norse lead, closing to 4-3 after four innings. USI rallied for four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead on the strength of five singles, a hit batter, and a fielder's choice.

USI junior rightfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) and senior center fielder Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana) continued to have the hot sticks for the Eagles. Werry, who is batting .409 in the last week, was two-for-four with a pair runs scored, while Beaven, who is hitting .421 in his last six games, was two-for-three with an RBI.

Eagles' junior second baseman Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana) and junior leftfielder Royle Beach (Aurora, Colorado) led USI's run production with two RBIs each in the win.

The Eagles resume GLVC play this weekend when they host a four-game series against the Flyers of Lewis University. The first pitch of the Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders is noon each day.
