KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The 25th-ranked University of Southern Indiana baseball team split the final two games of its four-game road trip to Rockhurst University on Monday in Kansas City, Missouri. USI took the opener, 13-2, but lost the nightcap, 18-6.

The Screaming Eagles' take their overall record to 26-12 overall and 16-3 in the GLVC, while the Hawks go to 14-23 overall, 7-13 GLVC. The victory in game one extended USI's winning streak to a season-best eight games before the loss in the nightcap.

The Eagles pounded out 14 hits to fly past the Hawks in the first game of the doubleheader, 13-2. USI's offensive explosion was led by junior rightfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana), who was three-for-four with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Werry has solidified the clean-up spot for the Eagles since becoming the starting rightfielder three weeks ago. He is batting .328 with 22 RBIs, four home runs, and 15 runs scored in the last 19 games.

In addition to Werry, junior second baseman Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana) and senior centerfielder Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indianapolis) also had three hits each. Beaven was three-for-three with a double, triple, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Huebner was three-for-four with an RBI and two runs scored.

On the mound, USI junior right-hander Matt Nichols (Evansville, Indiana) record his first victory of the year. Nichols (1-2) allowed four hits and one run in six innings of work, before giving way to senior right-hander Aaron Schmidt (Evansville, Indiana).

Schmidt allowed three hits and an unearned run in his only inning of work.

In the nightcap, the Hawks took advantage of four Eagle errors to win 18-6. Rockhurst scored 18 times on just 16 hits against six USI hurlers.

Beaven continued to have the hot stick for the Eagles, going three-for-three with a triple, two RBIs, and a run scored. He would the doubleheader with a perfect a six-for-six performance, while recording a double, two triples, three RBIs, and three runs scored.

The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of the USI Baseball Field on Wednesday when they host Northern Kentucky University for a non-conference game. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
