USI has to wait, but gets doubleheader sweep

Box Score: Southern Indiana 5, Rockhurst 4
Box Score: Southern Indiana 7, Rockhurst 2

Kansas City, Mo.. – A weather and poor field condition delay of two hours was worth it as the University of Southern Indiana baseball team swept a doubleheader from Rockhurst University, 5-4 and 7-2, Sunday evening in Kansas City, Missouri. USI, which ties a season-best with its seventh straight win, goes to 25-11 overall and 15-2 in the GLVC, while Rockhurst goes to 13-22 overall, 6-12 GLVC.

In the opener, USI junior second baseman Josh Huebner (Evansville, Indiana) gave the Eagles a 5-4 win with a two-out RBI single in the ninth innings. Huebner's single drove in junior designated hitter Caleb Ehmke (Waterloo, Indiana) with the game winner.

The Eagles began the game by taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. USI junior rightfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) opened the scoring with a two-run double and crossed the plate with the Eagles third run on a RBI-single by senior first baseman Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana).

After the Hawks bounced back with a run in the bottom of the first, the Eagles regained the three-run lead on Pleiss' second RBI single in the third. Rockhurst would respond with single tallies in the bottom of the third, fourth and fifth to tie game 4-4 and set the stage for Huebner in the ninth.

On the mound, USI sophomore right-hander Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) posted his team-best sixth win in relief of senior left-hander Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana). Geiger (6-2) pitched the eight, allowing a hit and a walk.

Julian went the first seven innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and struck out three.

USI junior right-hander Shaun Larsen (Tell City, Indiana) finished the game for the Eagles to record his school-record 10th save of the year. Larsen walked the lead-off hitter in the ninth before getting the final three outs.

In the nightcap, USI scored all the runs it would need in a four-run second inning and cruised to a 7-2 victory.

The Eagles were led by senior catcher Garrett Oros (Aurora, Illinois) and junior second baseman Kevin O'Hair (Scottsdale, Arizona). Oros was two-for-four with a run scored and two RBIs, including an RBI double to start the Eagle scoring in the second inning.

O'Hair was three-for-three and got on base four times, while driving in three RBIs.

On the mound, senior right-hander Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana) tied Geiger for the team lead in wins with his sixth win of the year. Kehrt (6-1) allowed six hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out two.
