EVANSVILLE, Ind.—University of Southern Indiana Head Softball Coach
Sue Kunkle recorded her 200th career victory at the helm of the Screaming Eagles Tuesday night. She reached the milestone with USI's 7-6 game-two victory over Brescia University at the USI Softball Field after the Eagles trounced the visiting Bearcats, 12-0 in five innings, in game one.
Kunkle joins former Head Coach Beth Watson as the only two in the program's history to reach the 200-win plateau. Kunkle needs just seven wins to surpass Watson for first place on USI's all-time list.
The Eagles (16-12) saw eight different players record an RBI in the third inning alone as they took advantage of a pair of Brescia errors to plate 10 runners before winning the game via the eight-run rule.
Sophomore catcher
Tara McConnell (Henderson, Kentucky) continued her red-hot hitting performance from yesterday's doubleheader sweep over Drury University as she went 2-for-3 from the plate with a double and team-best three RBIs.
In game two, freshman catcher
Dani Monks (Evansville, Indiana) hit a lead-off home run in the second inning jump-start USI's second straight three-run inning, which gave the Eagles a 6-0 lead.
After spotting the Bearcats six runs in the top of the third inning, USI used an RBI-single off the bat of freshman outfielder
Heather Swarts (Gas City, Indiana) in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-6 lead.
Senior pitcher
Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) came on in relief of game two and held the Bearcats hitless in the final four innings to pick up her second win of the night. Harrison (8-7) held Brescia to just four hits in game one to pick up her second shutout of the season. She recorded nine strikeouts in the first game and eight in the second game to pick up her third straight decision.
USI returns to action Saturday when it visits Quincy University for a GLVC doubleheader. The Eagles complete the two-day road trip Sunday when they visit No. 13 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Both doubleheaders are slated for noon starts.
Notes: Senior leftfielder
