Eagles pull to .500 with two wins

KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team reached the .500 mark Tuesday with a pair of wins at the Division II Rebel Spring Games. The Screaming Eagles started the day with a 7-4 victory over the University of Central Missouri and finished it with a 7-0 win over East Stroudsburg University.

USI (10-10) scored seven times in the first three innings to take a 7-0 lead against Central Missouri (6-10). Sophomore designated player Sara Loete (Pekin, Illinois) got the Eagles started in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run double.

Junior rightfielder Lacey Ligmanowski (Homer Glen, Illinois), who was 3-for-4 with a run scored, two doubles, and two RBIs, had a run-scoring double in the second inning. She capped off USI's three-run third inning with another run-scoring double.

Freshman first baseman Brittany DeWeese (Evansville, Indiana) had a solo home run in the third inning, while freshman second baseman Dani Finkelstein (Windsor, Colorado) had an RBI single in the third frame.

Junior pitcher Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) picked up the victory after allowing four runs off six hits in six innings of work. Schneider (4-2) struck out six batters before giving way to senior Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida), who picked up her first save of the year after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Harrison (4-7) returned against East Stroudsburg (3-7) to record USI's first shutout of the season. She allowed just three hits and struck out 12 batters in her most dominating performance of the season.

The Eagles used an RBI single off the bat of Loete to take a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. They plated two more runs in the second inning before using a three-run fifth inning to break the game wide open. Senior centerfielder Kirsten Morgan (Oakland City, Indiana) had an RBI single in the second inning, while Loete had a two-run double in the fifth inning.

Junior shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) had an RBI single in the fifth inning, while senior Niki Stewart (Evansville, Indiana) had an RBI in the seventh inning to complete the scoring for USI.

The Eagles finish the Rebel Spring Games Thursday when they take on Great Lakes Region foe Ferris State University at 2 p.m. (CDT) and Shippensburg University at 4 p.m. USI opens GLVC play Saturday when it visits the University of Indianapolis. The doubleheader is slated for an 11 a.m. (CDT) start.
