KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team rallied from a one-run deficit to defeat Upper Iowa University, 6-1, Monday morning at the Division II Rebel Spring Games. The Screaming Eagles, however, saw a four-run lead and a three-run lead evaporate as they lost to Ashland University, 8-7, later in the day.

After spotting Upper Iowa a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, USI (8-10) used five singles and a walk to plate four runners in the sixth inning and take a 4-1 lead. The Eagles tacked on two more tallies in the top of the seventh inning as they pulled out the victory.

Offensively, four different players recorded RBIs, including a pair from freshman second baseman Dani Finkelstein (Windsor, Colorado). Finkelstein went 2-for-4 in the game with a double and two runs batted in.

After picking up her first career victory Saturday, sophomore hurler Kambria Current (Indianapolis, Indiana) posted her first career complete-game victory. Current (2-0) limited the Peacocks to just four hits and one unearned run to pick up the win.

Against Ashland (2-3), USI used four hits and a pair of walks in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

Ashland, however, answered in the third inning with a four run inning of its own to tie the contest. The Ashland Eagles racked up five of their 12 hits in the third inning to get back into the contest.

USI, however, fired back with a three-run fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead heading into the final two innings. Once again, Ashland answered, this time using a three-run home run and capitalizing on an error to take an 8-7 lead into the bottom half of the seventh inning.

The Eagles went quietly in the bottom of the seventh as they lost the Great Lakes Region battle. Of USI's 10 loses this season, six have been by one run, including its last five setbacks.

Offensively, Finkelstein and junior shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) led the Eagles. Finkelstein was 2-for-4 from the plate with a double, triple, and two RBIs, while McKinley was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Senior leftfielder Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) also went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

Senior pitcher Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) took the loss for the Eagles. Harrison (3-7) gave up eight runs, seven earned, off 12 hits and three walks.

The Eagles get a break from Great Lakes Region opponents Tuesday when they battle the University of Central Missouri at 8 a.m. (CDT) and East Stroudsburg University at noon. USI concludes the Rebel Spring Games Thursday with Ferris State University and (2 p.m.) and Shippensburg University (4 p.m.).
