Brittany DeWeese (Evansville, Indiana) had four RBIs and senior hurler
Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) racked up eight strikeouts to lead the University of Southern Indiana softball team to a 6-2 victory over the University of West Alabama Sunday at the Charger Chillout. Earlier in the day, USI lost to No. 15 Valdosta State University, 13-4, in five innings.
DeWeese got the Screaming Eagles (3-5) on the board in the top of the first inning against West Alabama with a two-run single. She put the Eagles up, 4-0, with a two-run triple in the third inning.
Sophomore designated player
Sara Loete (Pekin, Illinois) added to the Eagles' run total with an RBI double in the fifth inning, while sophomore outfielder
Lindsay Raikes (Speedway, Indiana) scored on an error to give the Eagles another insurance run in the sixth inning.
West Alabama (8-8) capitalized on a USI error to plate a pair of runners in the fifth inning, but Harrison (2-3) would not be denied as she scattered four hits throughout seven innings to pick up the complete-game victory.
USI ran into a buzz-saw in its bout with Valdosta State (8-8). The Lady Blazers sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning and another nine to the plate in the third inning as they combined for 11 runs during the two-inning stretch.
DeWeese had an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning, while Loete hit a two-run blast over the right-centerfield fence in the fifth inning to provide the Eagles' offense.
Junior pitcher
Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) fell to 1-1 on the season after giving up seven runs off five hits in less than two innings of work.
The Eagles return to action Saturday when they travel to Edwardsville, Illinois, to take part in the Cougar Classic. USI plays No. 20 Wayne State University and No. 11 Emporia State University Saturday, before taking on Washburn University and participating in tournament play Sunday.
