Eagles notch 5-3 regional win over #20 Wayne State

Fall to #23 Georgia College & State University

DECATUR, Ala.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to knock off No. 20 Wayne State University, 5-3, in a Great Lakes Region contest Saturday at the University of Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout. Earlier in the day, the Screaming Eagles saw an early three-run lead evaporate in an 11-3 setback to No. 23 Georgia College & State University.

After spotting Wayne State (0-1) an early 2-1 lead, USI (2-4) plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 advantage. The Warriors tied the contest with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but senior third baseman/pitcher Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) hit a solo home run, her second of the season, in the fifth inning to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead.

Freshman first baseman Brittany DeWeese (Evansville, Indiana) went deep in the sixth inning to give the Eagles an insurance run, while junior hurler Stephanie Schneider (Birdseye, Indiana) pitched seven strong innings to pick up the victory. Schneider (1-0) scattered four hits and gave up just two earned runs in the complete-game victory.

Earlier in the game, freshman infielder Dani Finkelstein (Windsor, Colorado) put the Eagles on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the second inning. Junior rightfielder Lacey Ligmanowski (Homer Glen, Illinois) also had an RBI single in USI's two-run fourth inning.

Against Georgia C. & State U. (9-2), the Eagles plated three runs in the top of the first inning to jump out to the early lead. DeWeese had an RBI double before junior shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) followed with a two-run double.

The Bobcats, however, scored a run in the bottom of the first inning before sending 13 batters to the plate in a seven-run second inning that turned the tide of the contest. The Bobcats scored two more runs in the third inning and ended the game, via the eight-run rule, with a run in the sixth inning.

Senior pitcher Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) took the loss for the Eagles after surrendering seven runs off six hits in less than two innings of work. She falls to 1-3 with the decision.

The Eagles finish the Charger Chillout Sunday with games against No. 16 Valdosta State University (11 a.m.) and the University of West Alabama (3 p.m.).
