ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team was blanked by 17th-ranked Lewis University, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in Romeoville, Illinois. The loss eliminates USI from contention for a spot in the GLVC Tournament which is scheduled to begin November 2.
USI falls to 7-10-0 overall and 4-8-0 GLVC, will Lewis goes to 14-1-1 overall, 9-1-1 GLVC.
The Flyers got the only goal they would need at 15:57 to lead 1-0 at the intermission. Lewis would seal the match with a second goal at 59:13 and the third and final goal at 60:02.
The match was controlled from the start by Lewis, who outshot USI, 25-6, and had 14 shots on-goal. The teams were even in corner kicks, 4-4.
A bright spot for the Eagles was the play of senior goalkeeper
Andrew Haley (Wentzville, Missouri). Haley made nine saves and established a new USI single-season record for saves with 101. The old mark of 95 saves was set by Robbie Haigh in 2000.
USI concludes the 2008 campaign Wednesday when it hosts a non-conference match with Harris-Stowe State University at Strassweg Field. Match time is 4 p.m.
