Rawnsley scores twice and leads USI to 4-3 win over UW-Parkside

KENOSHA, Wis. -- University of Southern Indiana sophomore forward Simon Rawnsley (England) scored a pair of goals to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 4-3 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Friday afternoon in Kenosha, Wisconsin. USI stays in the hunt for a GLVC Tournament spot by raising its record to 7-9-0 overall and 4-7-0 in the GLVC, while UW-Parkside falls to 6-5-3 overall and 3-5-3 in the GLVC.

For USI to make the GLVC Tournament three things have to happen on Sunday. One and two are USI must defeat Lewis University and Bellarmine University must defeat Saint Joseph's College. The third thing is either a loss by Quincy University to the University of Missouri-St. Louis or a loss by UW-Parkside to Kentucky Wesleyan College.

The seven victories this season also is the most by the Screaming Eagles since 2003. The win also broke a four-match losing streak to the Rangers.

Rawnsley, who took over the team lead with his fourth and fifth goals of the season, scored his first goal of the match at 1:36 to give USI a 1-0 lead. The Rangers would respond by tying the match, 1-1, at 11:58.

The Eagles regained the lead with two more first half goals to take a 3-1 advantage into the intermission. USI senior defender Dan Grunewald (Munster, Indiana) gave USI a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the year at 37:20, while freshman midfielder Caleb Johnson (Evansville, Indiana) upped the lead to 3-1 with his third of the year at 38:48.

Grunewald was assisted on his goal by freshman defender Jared Eaton (Marion, Illinois), while Johnson's unassisted.

In the second half, Rawnsley scored the eventual game-winning goal at 52:33 to make the score 4-1. Johnson contributed to Rawnsley's second goal with his team-best seventh assist of the year.

The Ranger tried to rally, cutting the Eagles' lead to 4-3 with 32 minutes left, but the USI defense would hold for the victory.

Overall, UWP outshot USI, 22-10, and had a slim advantage on corner kicks, 8-7. USI senior goalkeeper Andrew Haley (Wentzville, Missouri) posted his sixth win of the year by making 12 saves.

The Eagles conclude the road trip and the GLVC regular season Sunday at Lewis. Match time is noon. Lewis raised its record to 13-1-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the GLVC with a 3-1 win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Friday.
