USI settles for 1-1 double-overtime tie

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team had to settle for a 1-1 double-overtime tie on Senior Day at Strassweg Field Sunday afternoon. USI's record goes to 4-10-1 overall and 1-8-1 in the GLVC, while SJC is 1-13-1 overall, 0-9-1 GLVC.

After a scoreless first half, the Pumas took a 1-0 lead at the 62:14 mark on a goal by senior forward Rachel Cobean. She was assisted on the tally by freshman forward Stephanie Wiethop.

The Screaming Eagles bounced back to tie the score three minutes later when freshman defender Carrie Growchowski (Homer Glen, Illinois) recorded her first collegiate goal at 65:27. Growchowski knocked in a cross from freshman forward Meagan Kempf (Evansville, Indiana) to tie the match, 1-1.

In overtime, both team had their opportunities with each team recording six shots each. USI had the better of the chances with four of the shot being placed on-goal.

The Eagles had the lead in shots, 24-13, during the match and the advantage in corner kicks, 8-3, but could not convert the 16 shots on-goal.

USI will be on the road to conclude the 2008 campaign, traveling to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Friday and to Lewis University on October 26. Match time at UW-Parkside is 3:30 p.m., while kick-off at Lewis is 2:30 p.m.
