EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team made an early goal by senior defender/midfielder
Tyree Robinson (Jefferson City, Missouri) stand up Friday evening as it upended the University of Indianapolis, 1-0, at Strassweg Field.
Robinson's goal, the fourth of the season for the 2007 All-GLVC performer, came in the seventh minute following a corner kick and a pass from sophomore forward
Simon Rawnsley (Bradford, England). It put the Screaming Eagles in the driver's seat, but gave them no wiggle room as the two teams battled to a stalemate throughout the rest of the opening period.
USI (6-8-0, 3-6-0 GLVC) held the Greyhounds to just four shots in the first half as it went into the locker room with the 1-0 advantage.
UIndy (5-5-3, 4-3-2 GLVC), however, turned up the heat on the Eagles in the second period. The Greyhounds fired off nine shots, four of which were on goal, and had four shots in the final five minutes of the contest to keep the pressure on.
Senior goalkeeper
Andrew Haley (Wentzville, Missouri), however, was up for the task as he stopped all four shots to preserve the victory for the Eagles. Haley finished the contest with seven saves en route to his fifth shutout of the season.
The victory also snapped a three-match losing streak for the Eagles and keeps their hopes of qualifying for the GLVC Tournament alive.
USI (6-8, 3-6 GLVC) returns to action Sunday at noon when it hosts Saint Joseph's College at Strassweg Field. The Eagles will honor Haley and Robinson as well as senior defender
Dan Grunewald (Munster, Indiana) and senior forward/midfielder
Mike Bendzen (Evansville, Indiana) prior to the match as part of its Senior Day festivities.
