LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Five University of Southern Indiana volleyball players had 10 or more kills as the Screaming Eagles defeated a red-hot Bellarmine University squad 25-22, 21-25, 25-12, 21-25, 15-11 Saturday afternoon.
USI (11-10, 5-6 GLVC), which had a huge showing of support from its men's and women's soccer teams—both squads were at Bellarmine Friday night and stayed for the match Saturday before traveling to Northern Kentucky University—used a solid performance in the first game to set the tone for the match.
The Eagles attacked at a .368 clip and used a 5-2 run to close the first set and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Bellarmine (6-9, 6-5 GLVC), which had won two straight matches and five of six heading into Saturday's contest, used runs of 6-1 and 5-0 in the second frame to even the match at 1-1.
Following the intermission, the Eagles blasted the Knights in the third set to reclaim the one-game advantage. The Eagles used seven of their 12.0 team blocks in the third frame and held the Knights to a negative .147 attacking percentage to grab the 2-1 lead.
Once again, however, the Knights battled back to even the match and force a deciding fifth set. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Beckman, the GLVC leader in kills per set, recorded seven of her match-high 25 kills in the fourth frame to lead the Knights.
The Eagles, though, saved their most prolific performance of the match for the fifth set to claim their season-best fourth straight win. USI hit .400 as a team in the deciding frame and used a 3-0 run late in the set to clinch the win.
