INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Saginaw Valley State University pinned a 25-21, 25-20, 25-19 setback on the Screaming Eagles Friday evening at the Asics GLVC/GLIAC Crossover.
Saginaw Valley State (17-4), which hit .301 for the match, jumped out to a 10-6 lead early in the first set; than used a 4-0 run to turn a one-point advantage into an 18-13 cushion before taking the four-point win in the opening frame.
USI (11-11) had a three-point edge midway through the second stanza, but once again, a SVSU run—this time a 6-1 stretch—put the Eagles in a whole they could not recover from.
In the final frame, the Eagles battled back from an early 5-0 deficit to tie the match at 6-6; but a 51 percent side-out clip by USI in the third game allowed the Cardinals to push points and eventually gain a comfortable six-point lead before settling for the 25-19 match-clinching victory.
Offensively, the Eagles got an outstanding effort out of sophomore outside hitter
Brittani Oliver (Indianapolis, Indiana) and junior setter
Melanie Pund (Ferdinand, Indiana). Oliver finished with 10 kills and a .450 attacking percentage, while Pund had 34 assists to lead the squad to a respectable .211 attacking percentage.
Junior outside hitter
Courtney Bealor (LaPorte, Indiana) also had 10 kills, while sophomore libero
Janae Curnutt (Arcadia, Indiana) added 10 digs.
The Eagles return to action Saturday when they face Northern Michigan University at noon (CDT) and Northwood University at 3 p.m.
