EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team allowed a goal in the final minutes to lose to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Edwardsville Illinois. USI finishes the season opening road swing 0-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the GLVC, while SIUE improves to 3-1-1, 2-0-0 GLVC.
A close match throughout, SIUE senior midfielder Katie Yearian scored the game-winning goal with 1:16 to play. Yearian put the ball into the top right corner of the goal off a pass from freshman forward Kiara Akpore.
The Screaming Eagles were out shot by the Cougars, 14-10, but had the advantage in shots on-goal, 8-6. The teams were tied in corner kicks with five apiece.
USI hopes to change its fortunes at the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field when it plays its home opener September 14 against Saint Joseph's College. Match time is for a 5 p.m. The USI-SJC match-up will start a five-game homestand for the Eagles.
