Eagles survive scare

Top Drury in five games

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team rallied from an 8-5 deficit in the fifth game to defeat Drury University 30-23, 20-30, 30-17, 28-30, 15-12 Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center.

USI (8-6, 3-3 GLVC) dominated game one and game three, posting attacking percentages of .447 and .419, respectively, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Drury (8-7, 2-4 GLVC), however, battled back from a four-point deficit in game four to even the match at two games each. The Panthers looked in control of the fifth and deciding game, but a service error by Megan Warhol turned momentum into the Screaming Eagles' favor.

The Eagles pushed two straight points to even the fifth frame at 8-8, then took a brief 11-10 advantage on a kill by freshman outside hitter Brittani Oliver (Indianapolis, Indiana).

USI, however, found itself down by one later in the game before kills by sophomore outside hitter Courtney Bealor (LaPorte, Indiana) and senior middle blocker Molly Rahman (Ferdinand, Indiana) gave it a 13-12 advantage. The Eagles benefited from an attacking error to gain 14-12 lead, then got a block out of Rahman and sophomore right side hitter/setter Melanie Pund (Ferdinand, Indiana) to finish the contest and break a two-match losing skid.

Oliver and Rahman led USI with 18 and 16 kills, respectively, while Bealor and sophomore middle blocker Ashley Henricks (Greenwood, Indiana) chipped in 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Bealor also attacked at a blistering clip of .438 and recorded 14 digs, while Henricks finished with a match-high seven blocks.

Pund also chipped in 14 digs, while junior libero Amber Gogel (Ferdinand, Indiana) finished with a team-high 29 digs. Senior setter Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) finished with 57 assists, five kills, a .308 attacking percentage, and 10 digs to aid the Eagles' effort.

USI returns to the road for three straight matches, starting with a trip to GLVC East Division leading University of Indianapolis Thursday at 6 p.m. (CDT). The Eagles also visit Saint Joseph's College Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 22 Northern Kentucky University next Saturday at 2 p.m. (CDT).
