ERIE, Pa. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team split its first road trip of the year after losing a 3-1 decision to Gannon University Sunday afternoon in Erie, Pennsylvania. The Screaming Eagles fall to 1-1-0 to start the 2007 campaign, while Gannon raises its record to 2-0-0.
The Knights did all of the scoring in the match, including an own goal to give the Eagles their only tally of the contest. Gannon opened the scoring when sophomore forward Dan Howell converted a penalty kick 4:26 into the match to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
The score was evened at 1-1 when Gannon's defense put USI on the scoreboard with an own goal 9:34 into the contest. The 1-1 tie lasted just 14 minutes as Gannon's senior forward Rudi Costa scored the game-winner at the 23:33 mark for a 2-1 halftime advantage.
The Knights would finish the scoring 1:19 into the final half for the final scored of 3-1.
Despite the loss, USI received an great effort from junior goalkeeper
Andrew Hults (Valley Park, Missouri). Hults allowed the three goals but faced 25 overall shots and made 10 saves.
Offensively, the Eagles had several chances. USI freshman midfielder
Michael Simcock (England) had five overall shots to lead the team, while senior forward
Evan Stoll had three shots on-goal.
Next week, the Eagles open the home half of the 2007 schedule September 2 when they host Georgetown College for a 3 p.m. match at Strassweg Field.
