ERIE, Pa.. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team won its season opener, 2-1, in double overtime over 25th-ranked Mercyhurst College Friday afternoon in Erie, Pennsylvania. The victory was the first time in five attempts that USI had ever beaten Mercyhurst in men's soccer.

USI senior midfielder Carl Carr (England) scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick with 10:32 left to play in the second "sudden-victory" overtime period. The goal was the second of the match.

Carr's first goal of the game gave the Eagles (1-0-0) a 1-0 lead in the second half. He scored an unassisted goal on an indirect kick with 19:56 left to play.

Mercyhurst (0-1-0) bounced back to send the game into overtime when freshman midfielder Thomas Lund tied the match 1-1 on a 40-yard shot with 4:32 left in the regulation.

Eagles' junior goalkeeper Andrew Hults picked up the victory in goal for USI. Hults allowed one goal and made six saves in recording his first victory as an Eagle.

USI complete its first road trip of the year Sunday at noon (CDT) when it plays Gannon University in Erie. The Eagles open the home half of the 2007 schedule September 2 when they host Georgetown College for a 3 p.m. match.
