EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split the final two games of a four-game series with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. SIUE won the GLVC game, 9-4, to open the doubleheader, but USI bounced back to win the non-conference nightcap, 6-0.

USI's record goes to 22-11 overall and 12-7 in the GLVC, while SIUE finishes the series 18-11 overall, 12-8 GLVC.

The Screaming Eagles were led in the nightcap victory by senior left-handed pitcher Brent Wendholt (St. Anthony, Indiana) and senior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana). Wendholt (2-2) threw his first complete game shutout as an Eagle, scattering four hits and striking out one in seven innings.

Slade provided Wendholt with all of the offense he would need in the third inning with a three-run double to left. The double was Slade's ninth of the year, tying him for the team lead with junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) and giving him a team-high 37 RBIs this season.

After the three-run third, the Eagles would seal the 6-0 victory with a three-run sixth. USI scored on RBI singles by junior shortstop Kevin O'Hair (Scottsdale, Arizona), junior leftfielder Bryan Rudden (Crystal Lake, Illinois) and junior centerfielder Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana).

In the opener, the Eagles gave up five runs in the last two innings to fall 9-4. USI senior right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) took the loss, allowing four unearned runs in two innings of work. Clark (1-1) gave up two hits and struck out two.

Eagles' senior right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) started the game, allowing nine hits and four runs in 5.1 innings of work.

At the plate, Beaven led the Eagles with a pair of hits, a run scored, and a RBI. The junior centerfielder gave USI a brief 2-1 lead in the third inning with a RBI triple to leftfield, scoring Rudden.

USI returns to action in the GLVC Wednesday for a rare evening doubleheader against the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The games will be played at GCS Park in Sauget, Illinois, with a game one first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. GCS is the site of the GLVC Tournament in May.

The doubleheader versus UMSL starts a six-game road-swing for the Eagles.
