EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team recorded a doubleheader sweep of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Saturday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. The Screaming Eagles took the first game 4-1 and the nightcap, 12-7.

USI raises its record to 21-10 overall and 12-6 in the GLVC, while SIUE falls to 17-10 overall, 11-8 GLVC. The wins also put USI in second place of the GLVC standings.

In the opener, the Eagles road to the 4-1 win on the right arm of senior hurler Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana). Summer (5-1) threw his fourth complete game of the year by allowing just two hits and a unearned run in seven innings of work.

Summers, who had a no-hitter going into the top of the fifth, also struck out four Cougars.

At the plate, USI scored all of the runs they would need in the three-run first inning. Senior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) and junior designated hitter Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana) each drove a run with singles, while junior catcher Garrett Oros (Aurora, Illinois) knocked a run in when he reached on a fielder's choice.

Slade finished the scoring for the Eagles in game one when reaching on a fielder's choice, driving in sophomore third baseman Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana).

In the nightcap, USI came from behind with an eight-run seventh inning to win 12-7. The Eagles, who were trailing 6-4 after six-and-a-half innings, scored eight times on six hits and were helped by two Cougar errors.

USI was led at the plate in game two by Oros, who was three-for-four with two runs scored and four RBIs, and Slade, who was three-for-five with three runs scored and a RBI.

On the mound, freshman right-hander Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) recorded his second victory in relief. Geiger (2-0) allowed just two hits and a unearned run in 4.1 innings of work. He came in to relieve starting left-hander Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana) in the fourth inning and got the Eagles out of a second-and-third jam after the Cougars had made the score 6-4.

Julian worked the first 3.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and six runs (four earned). USI senior right-hander Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) finished the game for the Eagles by pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Eagles and Cougars finish the series Sunday with a noon doubleheader at the USI Baseball Field. The first game will be a GLVC game, while the nightcap will be a non-conference contest.
