Mastroianni and Julian lead Eagles to 4-0 win

Box Score: USI 4, Indianapolis 0

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) and junior left-hander Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana) led the Screaming Eagles to a 4-0 victory over the University of Indianapolis on Senior Day Sunday at the USI Baseball Field. The Eagles raise their record to 35-16 overall and 23-12 in the GLVC, while Indianapolis falls to 24-23, 17-15 GLVC.

Mastroianni provided all of the offense the Eagles would need the fourth inning when he circled the bases on an inside-the-park home run to make the score 1-0. The home run, which was driven over the head of the Greyhound rightfielder Kyle Stephenson, was Mastroianni's second of the year.

In the bottom of the seventh, junior first baseman Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana) gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead with a bases loaded single, scoring freshman catcher Josh Jarboe (Connersville, Indiana). Mastroianni sealed the victory with a two-RBI single to centerfield to give USI a 4-0 lead, scoring junior shortstop Kevin O'Hair (Scottsdale, Arizona) and junior leftfielder Bryan Rudden (Crystal Lake, Illinois).

Mastroianni finished the day three-for-four with three RBIs, a home run, and a run scored. USI senior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) also had a pair of hits in his final regular season game at the USI Baseball Field.

On the mound, Julian (5-2) blanked the Greyhounds for nine innings on six hits and three walks. He also struck out six Indianapolis hitters.

Julian allowed only two runners past second base and helped himself by starting a 1-5 double play to get out of a second and third one-out jam in the seventh.

USI honored its six seniors – senior right-handers Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana), Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky), and Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) left-handers Brent Wendholt (St. Anthony, Indiana) and Jerry Reecer (Mooresville, Indiana) and Slade – prior to the game.

The Eagles will finish the 2007 regular season campaign on the road, beginning with a single-game at Bellarmine University Tuesday at 3 p.m. (CDT). The 3 p.m. (CDT) first pitch is a change from the original start time of 1 p.m.

USI's final three games of the regular season will be next weekend, May 5-6, in Springfield, Missouri, when it plays Drury University for the first time in baseball. The Panthers are in their inaugural season for baseball.
