USI scores five in fourth to win 6-4

Summers ties career-best with seventh win

EVANSVILLE, Ind.. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team's five-run fourth inning propelled the Screaming Eagles to a 6-4 victory over the University of Indianapolis Friday evening in front of a school record crowd of 450 at Bosse Field. USI takes its record to 34-15 overall and 22-11 in the GLVC, while UIndy falls to 23-22, 16-14 GLVC.

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Eagles loaded the bases and took a 2-1 lead on a single by junior shortstop Kevin O'Hair (Scottsdale, Arizona). The Eagles sealed the victory when junior centerfielder Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana) cleared the bases with a triple to left-center to make the score 5-1.

USI finished the five-run inning when Beaven scored on sacrifice fly by junior leftfielder Bryan Rudden (Crystal Lake, Illinois) to make score 6-1.

After the Eagles took the lead, senior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) took over. Summers (7-2) earned his seventh victory of the year with a complete game, allowing eight hits and four runs in nine innings. He also had six strikeouts as he tied his career-high for wins in a season.

The Eagles, as a team, reached the 34-win plateau for the first time since 1999.

USI's first run of the game came in third when junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) singled in Rudden to tie the score, 1-1. Mastroianni finished the game with two hits to raise his average to a team-best .398, while stealing two bases.

The two base swipes raises Mastroianni's total to 44 in 46 attempts on the season.

The Eagles and the Greyhound move the remainder of the three-game series to the USI Baseball Field Saturday and Sunday. Saturday is Varsity Club Day with a 2 p.m. first pitch, while Sunday is Senior Day with a 1 p.m. start time.
