Eagles awaken, sweep UM-Rolla

ROLLA, Mo.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team's bats awoke to the tune of 21 hits and 16 runs Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of the University of Missouri-Rolla Saturday.

USI (24-20, 8-8 GLVC) edged the Miners, 4-3, in game one before blasting the hosts in the second game, 11-2, in five innings.

In game one, USI scored three times in the top of the first inning to set the tone. Junior third baseman/pitcher Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio), senior second baseman Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana), and freshman designated player/catcher Tara McConnell (Henderson, Kentucky) each had RBIs in the inning that gave the Screaming Eagles a 3-0 advantage.

UM-Rolla (23-12, 11-7 GLVC) battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning when it put three runs across the plate.

USI, however, answered in the fourth when junior outfielder Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana), who went a combined 5-for-6 from the plate in the two games, came through with a run scoring single.

The 4-3 lead is all junior hurler Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) would need to pick up her team-leading 13th win of the season. Harrison (13-9) allowed just three unearned runs off five hits in seven innings of work.

In game two, the Eagles sent a combined 19 batters to the plate in the top of the second and third innings as they jumped out to a 9-2 lead. They tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning as they cruised to the 11-2 victory in five innings.

Offensively, the Eagles got a 3-for-4 performance and 3 RBIs out of Eickholt as well a pair of timely RBI-singles from junior centerfielder Kirsten Morgan (Oakland City, Indiana). Sophomore shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) had a two-run double, while Wood was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, a run scored, and an RBI.

Eickholt (7-6) settled down after giving up a pair of runs in the second inning to earn her seventh win of the year. She allowed just six hits, four of which came in the second inning, in five innings of work.

USI returns to action Sunday when it travels to Kansas City, Missouri, to take on Rockhurst University in a GLVC doubleheader. First pitch is slated for noon.
