USI's winning streak stopped

OWENSBORO, Ky.. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team finished a doubleheader sweep from March 14 with a 5-3 victory in the suspended game, but had its nine-game winning streak stopped with a 2-0 loss to Kentucky Wesleyan College Wednesday in Owensboro, Kentucky. USI's record goes to 31-12 overall and 19-8 in the GLVC, while KWC goes to 12-29 overall, 9-17 GLVC.

After 31 days, the Screaming Eagles were finally able to hang the "W" into the win column by defeating the Panthers, 5-3, in a game that was suspended back on March 14. Sophomore right-hander Michael Dewig (Haubstadt, Indiana) was credited with his first victory of the year in relief of USI senior right-handed starter Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky).

Dewig (1-1) pitched one-plus innings back on March 14 had allowed two walks in the eighth when play was suspended with USI leading 5-2. Senior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) pitched the Eagles out of trouble to re-start the suspended game, allowing just one of Dewig's runners to score.

USI senior right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) recorded his first save of the year by pitching a perfect ninth inning.

The game-winning hit for the Eagles was provided by senior second Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) back on March 14. Mastroianni gave USI a 5-2 lead on a three-RBI triple off of KWC starter Dean Futrell.

In the nine-inning game that had been postponed from March 20, KWC right-hander Dean Hinton held the Eagles to five hits and broke their 10-game winning streak. Hinton threw all nine innings, allowed five hits, and struck out five.

USI freshman right-hander Casey Geiger (Albion, Indiana) nearly matched Hinton inning-for-inning, but took the loss for the Eagles. Geiger (2-1) threw a complete game in his first collegiate start, allowing nine hits and two runs in eight innings. He also struck out a season-high five batters.

The only bad inning for Geiger was the fifth. The Panthers strung four hits together, scoring two runs with two outs.

USI resumes GLVC play on the road this weekend when it travels to Rockhurst University for a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. The first pitch each day is scheduled noon starts.
