ALTON, Ill.. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team reached the 30-win plateau for the first time since 1999 with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tuesday afternoon in Alton, Illinois. USI has won nine straight games, closing in on the school record of 15 that was set in 1993.
USI raises its record 30-11 overall and 18-7 in the GLVC, while UMSL falls to 15-16 overall, 11-13 GLVC.
In the opening game, USI junior left-hander
Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana) pitched his third complete game of the year in earning his fourth win. Julian (4-2) scattered six hits and allowed one run over seven innings.
Offensively, sophomore third baseman
Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Indiana) and junior first baseman
Josh Malone (Chesterton, Indiana) led the way by driving in three RBI's each. Sophomore designated hitter
Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) followed with a pair of RBIs.
USI junior second baseman
Darin Mastroianni set the USI single-season record for stolen bases in the fifth inning. Mastroianni's 36th stolen base of the year broke the record set by Todd DeWeese in 1989.
The 2-0 nightcap victory was highlighted by senior left-hander
Brent Wendolt (St. Anthony, Indiana) third straight win and his second complete game shutout in three starts. Wendholt (4-2) went nine innings, scattering three hits.
The Eagles provided all of the offense Wendholt would need in the third inning. Senior rightfielder
Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) scored junior shortstop
Kevin O'Hair (Scottsdale, Arizona) and junior centerfielder
Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana) with a two-RBI single to center.
The game-winning hit was Slade's third in four games.
USI resumes GLVC action noon Wednesday at Kentucky Wesleyan College. The Eagles and the Panthers will start play by finishing a suspended game from March 14, followed by a postponed game from March 20.
