MOREHEAD, Ky.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team was held to a total of four hits as it lost both games of a doubleheader to Division I Morehead State University Tuesday afternoon.
Morehead State's (17-25) Kari Quinn allowed just three base runners and held the Screaming Eagles (22-20) without a hit to lead her squad to a 7-0 victory over USI in game one.
Junior third baseman/pitcher
Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) took the loss for USI after giving up five runs off seven hits in two-and-a-third innings of work. All five runs and five of the seven hits came in the bottom of the second inning. Eickholt falls to 6-6 with the setback.
Morehead State's duo of Sarah Funston and Alex Gjevre combined to hold the Eagles to just four hits to lead their squad to a 2-0 win in game two.
Despite a solid effort, junior
Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) was charged with the loss after allowing just two runs off five hits in six innings of work. Harrison (12-9) struck out five batters, while issuing just two walks.
On a positive note, junior outfielder
Kathy Wood (Lynnville, Indiana) got her first hit since going down with a knee injury March 20. Wood, who returned to the lineup this past weekend at the X-Trem Graphics Classic, was 1-for-3 from the plate in the second game.
USI also got singles from Eickholt and senior second baseman
Audra Lindenschmidt (Evansville, Indiana), as well as a double from freshman catcher
Tara McConnell (Henderson, Kentucky).
The Eagles return to action Thursday when they host Brescia University in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at the USI Softball Field.
