Eagles defeat Lander, USC-Aiken

DAHLONEGA, Ga.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team closed out the X-Trem Graphics Classic with a 3-1 record after posting a 5-1 victory over the University of South Carolina-Aiken and a 16-1, five-inning victory over Lander University Saturday.

Junior third baseman/pitcher Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) went a combined 4-for-8 with a home run, four runs scored, and five RBIs. She hit a solo home run and had a two-run double to help the Eagles overcome a 1-0 deficit against USC-Aiken. Senior leftfielder Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky) and junior centerfielder Kirsten Morgan (Oakland City, Indiana) each had RBI singles in the victory.

Junior hurler Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) shut down a potent USC-Aiken offense to earn the complete-game victory. Harrison (12-8) allowed just one unearned run off six hits in seven innings of work.

USI (22-18) brought 19 players to the plate and scored 13 times in the top of the first inning en route to its victory over Lander. The Screaming Eagles saw all nine of their starters record an RBI as they rolled to their most lop-sided victory of the season.

Sophomore shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) and freshman catcher Tara McConnell (Henderson, Kentucky) led the Eagles with three RBIs apiece, while Eickholt and senior first baseman Jennifer Mullikin (Greenwood, Indiana) each had a pair of RBIs.

Eickholt (6-5) earned the win after allowing just one run off four hits in three innings inside the pitching circle.

The Eagles, who racked up 41 hits and hit a combined .336 as a team during the four-game classic, return to action Tuesday when they travel to Morehead, Kentucky, to take on Division I foe Morehead State University. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m. (CDT).
