EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana baseball team scored seven unanswered runs, including four in the bottom of the fifth inning, to defeat the University of Findlay, 9-4, in the first game of a three-game set Sunday at the USI Baseball Field.

USI (5-3) used three straight bunts to get its four-run fifth inning started. Sophomore outfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) tied the game with a two-run double to the leftfield fence that plated junior centerfielder Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana) and senior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina), who reached base with bunt-singles at the start of the inning.

Senior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) singled in the next at-bat to score Werry and give the Screaming Eagles a 5-4 lead and an advantage they would not relinquish. Slade was 4-of-5 in the game with three RBIs, while Werry was 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of RBIs.

Junior first baseman Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana) also had a double and a pair of RBIs, while junior catcher Garrett Oros (Aurora, Illinois) drove in a run.

Senior hurler Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana) picked up the victory to improve to 2-0 on the season after giving up four runs off five hits in five innings of work. Fellow classmate Aaron Clark (Madisonville, Kentucky) blanked the Oilers, who fell to 2-1 with the loss, in four innings of relief to record his first save of the season. Clark gave up four walks while not allowing a hit.

The three-game series between USI and Findlay resumes Monday with a doubleheader at the USI Baseball Field. First pitch is slated for noon.
