EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team completed a series sweep of the University of Findlay by taking both halves of a doubleheader, 1-0 and 5-1, Monday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI improves to 7-3 overall, while Findlay goes to 2-3.
The Screaming Eagles have reached the 7-3 mark for the first time since 1996 when the team started the year 10-3. The three-game series sweep also was the first for the Eagles since 2000.
In the first game, USI junior first baseman
Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana) scored the game winner in the bottom of the seventh inning off a single by senior rightfielder
Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana). Pleiss had reached on a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by junior second baseman
Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina).
USI senior right-hander
Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) picked up his first victory and complete-game shutout of the year in the win. Summers allowed just four hits and struck out three in seven innings.
In the nightcap, the Eagles soared out to a 4-0 lead early and cruised to a 5-1 victory. USI scored three in the first inning, one in the second, and one in the sixth for the margin of victory.
Slade led the Eagles offensively with a pair of hits in three at-bats, scoring twice and driving in another run. USI had four other players with a hit and a RBI.
On the mound, junior left-hander
Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana) went the distance to earn his first victory as an Eagle. Julian scattered seven hits and allowed a run over seven innings. He also struck out four.
USI goes on the road Tuesday when it starts a two-game series at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday and 1 p.m. Wednesday.
The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the USI Baseball Field Saturday and Sunday to open the GLVC schedule against the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
