EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team fell victim to the long ball as it dropped both games of its GLVC-opening doubleheader to Quincy University Sunday at the USI Softball Field.

Quincy's sophomore catcher Jasmyn Wentland belted a pair of two-run shots over the fence as the Lady Hawks defeated the Screaming Eagles 3-2 in game one and 4-0 in game two.

USI (13-11, 0-2 GLVC) trailed 3-0 in game one before scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to one run. Sophomore shortstop Ally McKinley (Sullivan, Indiana) and senior leftfielder Nikki Nichols (Henderson, Kentucky) each had an RBI in the inning to bring the Eagles into striking distance.

The Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but could not put the tying run on the board as they fell in the opening contest.

Junior hurler Amy Harrison (Graceville, Florida) was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs, one earned, off five hits in seven innings of work. Harrison falls to 7-4 with the setback.

After five innings of scoreless ball in the second game, Quincy (11-11, 4-4 GLVC) plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Hawks tacked on another run in the seventh to seal the victory.

Junior Kristin Eickholt (Van Wert, Ohio) took the loss despite pitching a one-hit shutout through the first five innings. Eickholt (2-2) gave up four runs off four hits in seven innings of action.

USI returns to action Monday when it hosts the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a GLVC doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at the USI Softball Field.
