EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana baseball team split a doubleheader with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday in its GLVC-opener at the USI Baseball Field.
USI (10-4, 1-1 GLVC) opened the day with a 6-3 victory over the Rangers in game one, but fell 11-10 in the nightcap.
In game one, the Screaming Eagles overcame a 3-2 deficit by plating four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Senior rightfielderÂ
Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) had a two-out, two-run single to give the Eagles a 4-3 advantage before junior catcherÂ
Garrett Oros (Aurora, Illinois) came through with another two-run single in the next at-bat.
The Eagles got a solid effort out of senior right-handed pitcherÂ
Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana). Summers (3-0) scattered six hits and three runs, two earned, throughout six innings to pick up the victory. SeniorÂ
Brook Meier (Rock Falls, Illinois) came in at the start of the seventh to earn his team-leading third save of the season.
Other key performers for the Eagles in game one included junior first basemanÂ
Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana), who was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, and junior centerfielderÂ
Michael Beaven (Indianapolis, Indiana), who went 3-for-3 with a two runs scored.
In the second game, the Eagles overcame an early 2-0 deficit to take a 5-2 lead into the sixth inning. The Rangers (4-1, 1-1 GLVC), however, went through four USI pitchers to score six runs in the sixth to grab an 8-5 advantage.
USI answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at eight. USI also scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to counter the pair of runs the Rangers put up in the top of the inning and send the contest into the ninth with the scored tied at 10.
UW-Parkside, however, put another run up in the ninth inning and held the Eagles at bay in the bottom of the inning to salvage a split.
Beaven led the Eagles from the plate in the second game as he went 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs, and a pair of runs scored. Pleiss and junior second basemanÂ
Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) each had a pair of RBIs, while junior leftfielderÂ
Bryan Rudden (Crystal Lake, Illinois) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Junior right-handerÂ
Aaron Schmitt (Evansville, Indiana) suffered the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the ninth inning. He falls to 0-1 with the setback.
The two teams will square off again in the rubber-match of the three-game series Sunday at noon at the USI Baseball Field.
