USI splits a high scoring doubleheader with HSU

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team spit a high-scoring doubleheader with Henderson State University to begin a four-game series Sunday afternoon in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. USI won the opener 11-10, while HSU took the nightcap, 19-1.

The Screaming Eagles take their record to 3-1 overall, while the Reddies go to 2-12 in 2007.

After spotting HSU a 3-0 lead, USI had to come from behind and then hold on to win the opener. The Eagles score 11 unanswered runs – one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and seven in the sixth – to take an 11-3 lead.

The Reddies bounced back with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth before senior right-hander Brook Meier (Rock Falls, Illinois) closed the door to earn his first save of the year. Meier worked the final inning-and-a-third, allowing just one hit.

The Eagles were led in the opener by sophomore designated hitter Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana), who had a pair of home runs.

Werry got the Eagles on the board in the fourth inning with his first home run of the game. He capped off USI's seven-run sixth with a three-run blast to finish the game two-for-four with four RBIs. Werry has three home runs in the USI's first four games.

USI also got a multiple RBI performances from junior second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) and junior first baseman Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana). Pleiss drove in three runs, while Mastroianni knocked in a pair.

The winning pitcher was senior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana). Summers (1-0) went the first 5.1 innings allowing eight hits, seven runs. He also struck out six batters.

In HSU's 19-1 nightcap victory, the Reddies pounded out 24 hits off four Eagle hurlers. USI's only run came in the top of the ninth when senior rightfielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) doubled in Mastroianni.

Eagles senior left-hander Brent Wendholt (St. Anthony, Indiana) took the loss. Wendholt went only 1.1 innings and allowed nine hits and eight runs.

USI and HSU finish the four-game series with a doubleheader noon Monday. The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the USI Baseball Field Wednesday when they host Oakland City University for a 1 p.m. single game.
