ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions to Henderson State University Monday afternoon in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The Reddies won the opener 10-9 and the nightcap, 9-8.
USI falls to 3-3 overall, while HSU takes its record to 4-12.
The Screaming Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opener when the Reddies began to chip away at the lead. HSU scored three in sixth and won the game with four in the seventh to win 10-9.
Senior right-handerÂ
Brook Meier (Rock Island, Illinois) took the loss in relief, allowing a grand slam with one out in the seventh. Junior right-handerÂ
Cory Julian (Lynnville, Indiana) started the game, going 4.1 innings and allowing six hits and three runs.
Offensively, junior second basemanÂ
Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina) led the way with three hits, two RBIs, and a run scored. Junior first basemanÂ
Matt Pleiss (Newburgh, Indiana), junior catcherÂ
Garrett Oros (Auroa, Illinois), and sophomore third basemanÂ
Alex Thieroff (Greenfield, Illinois) also had a pair of hits in the USI attack.
In the nightcap, HSU scored the winning run in the final at-bat once again to spoil a USI comeback and win 9-8. The Reddies took a 7-0 lead into the top of the sixth when USI scored four times to cut the lead in half.
After USI cut the lead to 7-6 in the top of the seventh, HSU extended its lead to 8-6 with a run in bottom of the eighth. The Eagles tied the game in the top of the ninth on a two-run home run by Mastroianni.
The Reddies scored the gamewinner on a RBI single in the ninth off of senior left-handerÂ
Brent Wendholt (St. Anthony, Indiana).
Wendholt took the loss for the Eagles, allowing a run on two hits. Senior right-handerÂ
Aaron Clark went the first five innings for the Eagles, allowing 10 hits and seven runs.
The Eagles return to the friendly confines of the USI Baseball Field Wednesday when they host Oakland City University. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Werry named GLVC Player of the Week
EVANSVILLE, Ind. USI sophomore outfielder/designated hitterÂ
Chad Werry was named the GLVC Player of the Week for last week's efforts against Oakland City University and Henderson State University. The Player of the Week honor is the second of Werry's career.
Werry went 2-for-4 in the opening game, a 9-4 win over OCU. He collected a home run, a double, three runs scored and two RBI in the win.
In the Eagles' 15-4 nightcap win over OCU, Werry finished 3-for-4 with one run, a double and walk.
Werry returned in USI's 11-10 win at Henderson State to post a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. He belted two home runs, including a three-run shot that proved to be the winning margin. He finished with four RBI and two runs in the contest.
For the week, Werry was 9-for-15 (.400) with six runs, nine RBI, three home runs and two doubles.
