USI wins in the final minute, 58-57

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team took its second lead of the game in the final minute and made it stand up in a 58-57 victory over Michigan Tech University Sunday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. USI raised its record 7-2 overall, while Michigan Tech falls to 6-6.

USI sophomore forward/center George Cunningham (San Diego, California) sank the game-winning free throw with 36 seconds to play for the Screaming Eagles' victory. The Eagles' protected the one-point lead in the final 30 seconds with a stiff defensive stand to prevail.

In the first half, the Eagles spotted the Huskies a 7-0 lead to start the game and trailed as many as 11 points twice in the opening half. USI was able to cut the lead to one, 31-30, in the final minute, but trailed at the intermission, 34-30.

USI cut the margin to two points twice in the first eight minutes of the second half before the Michigan Tech re-extended the margin to 11 points, 51-40, with 8:05 to play. The Eagles proceeded to go on a 16-4 run to take their first lead of the game, 56-55, with 2:27 left.

Michigan Tech tied the game, 57-57, with 1:35 to play and set the stage for Cunningham.

Individually, USI was led by senior forward Norman Plummer (Cincinnati, Ohio), who recorded his fifth double-double of the year with a 17 point and 16 rebound performance. The 16 rebounds was a season-high for Plummer.

Plummer was followed in the scoring column by junior forward Anthony Pimble (Bronx, New York), who had 13 points, and senior guard Tyson Schnitker (Robinson, Indiana), who had 12 points.

The Eagles start the new year on the road when they resume GLVC action at the University of Missouri-St. Louis on January 3 and Missouri University of Science and Technology on January 5. Game time for USI-UMSL match-up is 7:30 p.m., while tip-off for USI-Missouri S&T contest is 3 p.m.
