Vaughan scores twice to help Eagles sweep homestand

USI 4, Lewis 1

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — University of Southern Indiana sophomore forward Julie Vaughan (Evansville, Indiana) scored a pair of goals to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 4-1 victory over Lewis University Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. USI raises record to 6-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the GLVC, while Lewis falls to 5-9-0, 3-7-0 GLVC.

The Eagles sweep their homestand and have a grasp of the final GLVC Tournament slot going into next week's action. USI holds the tie-breaker with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, which also is 4-4-1 in the GLVC, due to Friday's 2-0 victory over the Rangers.

USI has four GLVC matches remaining in 2007.

In the match, Vaughan scored just 17 seconds into the match to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Vaughan's drive through the middle of the field was assisted by a pass from sophomore forward Katie Teagarden (Speedway, Indiana).

After going into the locker room with the 1-0 lead, the Eagles exploded for three goals just after halftime. Senior back Keri Land (Noblesville, Indiana) scored the eventual game-winning goal at 49:10 to make the score 2-0. Land converted a corner kick from senior forward Julie Collins (Merrillville, Indiana) for her first collegiate goal.

USI senior forward Katie Grossman (Evansville, Indiana) made the score 3-0 with her third goal of the season, off a corner kick by Vaughan at 52:07.

Vaughan finished the scoring 34 seconds later when she ricocheted a corner kick off the Lewis defense and into the back of the net at 52:41. Today's goals were her third and fourth of the year, tying sophomore midfielder Shauni Boudia for the team lead in goals.

Lewis would get onto the board at the 86:07 mark for the 4-1 final.

The Eagles, who are 5-1-1 at Strassweg and 1-6-0 on the road, will travel to Kentucky for their next two matches. USI play at Northern Kentucky University October 12 and at Bellarmine University October 14 before returning to Strassweg Field on October 19.
