Eagles fall despite late goal

#23 SIU Edwardsville (5-3-3, 5-2-1 GLVC): 2, at Southern Indiana (1-8-1, 0-6-1 GLVC): 1

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Senior defensive midfielder Brian Shepherd (St. Louis, Missouri) scored a goal in the 89th minute of the game to cut a two goal deficit in half, but it was not enough as the University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team fell to No. 23 Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, 2-1, Friday evening at Strassweg Field.

Shepherd scored the goal with a header off a corner kick by senior midfielder/forward Brett Palazzola (St. Louis, Missouri). The Screaming Eagles (1-8-1, 0-6-1 GLVC) had five shots, four of which came in the second half, while the Cougars took seven shots.

SIUE (5-3-3, 5-2-1 GLVC) scored in the 32nd minute of the game when Ross Beveridge used a cross pass from Mike Banner to get the ball past USI goalkeeper Jake Bryan (Portage, Indiana), who finished the contest with one save. Banner also assisted on the Cougars' second goal, which came off the foot of Kevin Thibodeau in the 50th minute.

USI returns to action Sunday when it hosts Quincy University at noon. Quincy (3-7-1, 3-5-1 GLVC) defeated Kentucky Wesleyan College, 3-2, Friday afternoon.
