USI men's soccer stumbles in GLVC opener

Southern Indiana (1-1-0, 0-1-0 GLVC): 0, Lewis (3-0-0, 1-0-0 GLVC): 1

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team lost a heartbreaker at Lewis University, 1-0, Friday afternoon in Romeoville, Illinois. USI falls to 1-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the GLVC, while Lewis goes to 3-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 GLVC.

Lewis scored the game-winning goal with 16:20 to play in the match, off the foot of sophomore midfielder Cory Mastey.

A bright spot for the Screaming Eagles was the play of sophomore goalkeeper Jake Bryan (Portage, Indiana), who set a single-game school record with 16 saves in the match. Bryan had tied the school record of 15 in the season finale against Lewis last year.

Offensively, the Eagles were able to muster only one shot on-goal and one corner kick.

USI stays on the road in the GLVC, traveling to Kenosha, Wisconsin, to play the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Sunday at noon. UWP raised its record to 3-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 GLVC, after defeating Kentucky Wesleyan College, 9-0, Friday afternoon.

The Eagles return to the friendly surroundings of Strassweg Field September 8 for the home opener against Drury University.
