EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team began the 2006 campaign with a victory, shutting out Oakland City University, 1-0, Tuesday evening at Strassweg Field. The season opening victory was the first for the Screaming Eagles since 1999. .
USI junior forward
Michael Dugger (Madisonville, Indiana) gave the Eagles all of the goals they would need, scoring on a penalty kick at the 4:33 mark. The Eagles were awarded a penalty kick after USI junior midfielder
Evan Stoll (Washington, Indiana) was fouled in the box.
After the only goal of the game, the match was very even. The Mighty Oaks out shot the Eagles 7-6 and had the advantage in corner kicks 9-6.
Defensively, USI was led by sophomore goalkeeper
Jake Bryan (Portage, Indiana). Bryan earned his first collegiate shutout after saving the only shot on-goal of the evening by Oakland City.
USI opens the 2006 GLVC schedule at the end of this week when it travels to Lewis University on Friday and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday. Both matches start at noon.
The next home game for USI is September 8 when Drury University comes to Strassweg Field for a GLVC contest.
