PENSACOLA, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana opened the 2006 season with a pair of victories Friday in the University of West Florida Invitational. The Screaming Eagles bested Edinboro in four games (30-16, 28-30, 30-13, 30-20) before trouncing host West Florida in three games (30-24, 30-13, 30-27).
USI (2-0) plays Northwood University and the University of South Dakota Saturday at 9 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. to finish the opening weekend.
Southern Indiana 3, Edinboro (0-1) 1
The Eagles racked up 16 service aces and eight team blocks to defeat Edinboro 30-16, 28-30, 30-13, 30-20 in their season-opener.
Junior defensive specialist
Cara Keever (Ft. Wayne, Indiana) had a match-high five aces to go with 10 digs, while senior outside hitter
Chelse Doubler (Griffin, Indiana) tallied six blocks, including one solo block, and a match-high 12 kills.
Freshman middle blocker
Ashley Henricks (Greenwod, Indiana) aided the Eagles with six blocks and a .357 attacking percentage, while junior middle blocker
Molly Rahman (Ferdinand, Indiana) had a 10 kills and a .412 attacking percentage.
USI held Edinboro to a .040 attacking percentage, partly due to the play of freshman outside hitter
Courtney Bealor (Greenwood, Indiana). Bealor led the Eagles with a match-high 12 digs to go along with nine kills, four aces, and a .304 attacking clip.
Junior setter
Stephanie Wilson (Terre Haute, Indiana) recorded a match-high 41 assists as the Eagles won their season-opener for the third time in four years.
Southern Indiana 3, West Florida (0-2) 0
USI overcame a 6-1 deficit in game one and never looked back as it cruised to a 3-0 victory. The Eagles served up 13 aces, tallied 11 blocks, and held West Florida to a negative attacking percentage (-.016).
Rahman and senior outside hitter
Emily Ryan (Battesville, Indiana) led the Eagles with 11 kills a piece. Rahman finished the match with a .409 attacking percentage and a match-high six blocks.
Keever led USI with a match-high 15 digs, while Wilson finished with a match-high 34 assists.
