FLORENCE, Ky. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team was swept for a second straight week by Northern Kentucky University, this time 1-0 and 7-3 in Highland Heights, Kentucky. USI falls to 11-19 overall and 8-18 in the GLVC, while NKU raises its record to 23-10-1 overall, 21-6-1 GLVC.
USI senior right-handerÂ
Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana) was the tough-luck loser in the opener. Watson (0-3) went the distance and allowed three hits and a unearned run for the loss.
The Eagles were held to one hit by NKU starter Josh Bruns in game one. USI's sophomore third basemanÂ
Sam Shahine (W. Lafayette, Indiana) picked up the hit in the fourth inning.
In the nightcap, USI jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning with four straight hits. Freshman designated hitterÂ
Kirby Dunagan (Greensburg, Indiana) led off with a double and advanced to third on a single by sophomore second basemanÂ
Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina).
Dunagan was driven home on a single by freshman rightfielderÂ
Ryan Gilliland (Aledo, Illinois), while Mastroianni scored on a single by junior first basemanÂ
Josh Malone (Chesterton, Indiana).
The Norse responded in the bottom of the second with all the runs they would need, scoring four times off of USI starterÂ
Jeremy Kehrt (Plainfield, Indiana). USI would close the gap to 4-3 in the fourth when junior leftfielderÂ
Hunter Slade (Evansville, Indiana) drove in Malone, but it would get no closer.
NKU would extend the margin to 7-3 with the help of the long ball in the fourth and fifth and a single tally in the eighth.
Kehrt (2-4) took the loss for the Eagles and was followed to the mound by five additional hurlers.
USI goes back on the road Saturday and Sunday when it travels to the University of Missouri-St. Louis for a four-game series. Saturday's games are scheduled to be played at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Simmons-Cooper Baseball Complex, while Sunday's doubleheader is scheduled to be played at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Illinois. The first pitch Saturday and Sunday is scheduled for noon each day.
