EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Saint Joseph's College Saturday afternoon to begin the final GLVC homestand of the year. SJC won the opener, 4-2, and the nightcap, 7-3.

Despite suffering the loss in game one, USI senior left-hander Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) tied a USI season-record for ERA. Arnold finished the year with a 1.36 ERA, tying a 27-year old record set by Dave Sensenbrenner in 1979. Sensenbrenner is a currently a USI assistant coach.

Arnold (2-6) allowed eight hits and four runs in 6 2/3 innings of work. He also struck out three Pumas. Freshman right-hander Dan Kissel (Evansville, Indiana) finished the game for Arnold in the seventh.

USI was led at the plate in game one by sophomore second baseman Darin Mastroianni (Huntersville, North Carolina), going three-for-three with a double. Junior right-fielder Hunter Slade (Newburgh, Indiana) also had a pair of hits in the loss and a double.

In the nightcap, the Pumas jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Eagles could get onto the scoreboard. USI cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Slade scored on a single by freshman shortstop Chad Bruce (Fountaintown, Indiana) and senior designated hitter Jed Davis (Grayville, Illinois) scored on a sacrifice fly by Mastroianni.

Saint Joseph's would rebuild the lead a run in the sixth, two more in the eighth, and a final tally in the ninth to take a 7-2 lead. Davis would score for a second time in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Bruce for the 7-3 final.

USI junior right-hander Adam Summers (Dyer, Indiana) suffered the loss in game two. Summers (4-3) went 7 1/3 innings, allowing six runs, four earned, and nine hits. He also struck out five Pumas.

The Eagles (18-31, 15-29 GLVC) will have Senior Day Sunday when they host the Pumas (28-20, 23-19 GLVC) to conclude the four-game series at the USI Baseball Field. Prior to the first pitch at noon, USI will honor its five seniors – Arnold, Davis, first baseman Chris Turner (West Lafayette, Indiana), right-handed pitcher Dustin Jourdan (Evansville, Indiana), and right-handed pitcher Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana).
