EVANSVILLE, Ind.
– The University of Southern Indiana baseball team concluded the 2006 season by dropping a doubleheader to Saint Joseph's College Sunday afternoon at the USI Baseball Field. USI lost game one, 5-4, in extra innings and game two, 2-0.

In the opener, the Screaming Eagles (18-33, 15-31 GLVC) could not hang onto a 4-2 lead in the seven inning and lost a 5-4 decision in the eighth. The Pumas scored the game-winner without a hit in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly after loading the bases on a hit batter and two walks.

The game began with both team scoring a run in each of the first two innings. USI broke the tie in the fifth inning on a RBI triple by freshman centerfielder Chad Werry (New Harmony, Indiana) and a RBI single by senior catcher Jed Davis (Grayville, Illinois). Saint Joseph's tied the score in the seventh when senior centerfielder Danny Flores singled in a pair of runs off of USI junior right-hander Adam Vetter (Crown Point, Indiana).

Vetter, who missed a chance at a team-leading fifth victory of the year, went seven innings for USI and took a no-decision. He allowed seven hits and four runs, while striking out seven.

USI junior left-hander Jerry Reecer (Mooresville, Indiana) took the loss in relief. Reecer (0-1) hit a batter and got one to begin the eighth inning, while senior right-hander Dustin Jourdan (Evansville, Indiana) got the final two outs after allowing a pair of walks (one intentional).

In the nightcap, Saint Joseph's junior left-hander Matt Enderle won a pitcher's duel with USI senior right-hander Mike Watson (Madison, Indiana). Enderle went seven innings, scattering four USI hits and struck out three batters.

Watson (1-6) finished his career by throwing a complete game, allowing eight hits and two runs, one earned.

Five USI seniors – Watson, Davis, Jourdan, first baseman Chris Turner (W. Lafayette, Indiana) and left-handed pitcher Nathan Arnold (Evansville, Indiana) – were honored prior to the game.
